Origami Creations - Three Wise Monkeys

As we are in the 3rd day of the Lunar New Year of the Red Monkey, I would like to share a cute fold titled the "Three Wise Monkeys" designed by the Japanese origamist Tsubo Tadashi.

See No Evil, Speak No Evil and Hear No Evil

It carries a wonderful message of not dwelling in evil thoughts and actions so as to ensure embracing a positive perspective in life.

Below is another photo of the three monkeys.  Ain't they cute?  You can find the ori-diagram in the book Tanteidan Magazine no. 154.

Origami Creations - Goats Final Bow

Goats and more goats .... well its the chinese year of the goat so it can never be more appropriate to make more of them this year.

This is the Mountain goat designed by the singaporean origamist Eileen Tan.

The model speaks for itself and it is indeed a wonderful fold with unique and surprising steps.

Origami Design - My Simple Sheep for CNY 2015

Finally, I got my own sheep design and submitted to the Japan Origami Academy Society (JOAS) celebration for World Origami Days (WOD).  Also, I used it for the International Origami Internet Olympiad competition  as my design task.

It will be the Chinese New Year of the Goat/Sheep next year so it is my fitting tribute to the best holiday of the year in Asia!

Paper Folding for the Dearly Departed

The last two (2) days was sombre and a very busy paper folding day.  Not for any special origami event but instead to bade a fond farewell to my dearest aunt Wai Cheuk as we finally lay her to rest to be with our creator.

As part of the chinese traditional funeral custom, I and my relatives had to fold some paper offerings which will be burned for her to bring into the afterlife.

Life must go on ... and I know as I go through this rite of passage, I will become more attune to what's important in life ... to be thankful for every waking morning and to live each day to the fullest!

Ching Ming Festival (清明節) in Hong Kong

Yesterday was the Ching Ming Festival (清明節) in Hongkong.  It is a holiday celebrated by the chinese people to pay respect to their dearly departed ancestors.

Literally, Ching Ming means "clean and bright".  And yes, this is so as we had to work and clean the graves from weeds aside from making offerings of food and lighting incense candles.

It was a bright and sunny day.  I prayed for my Ah Ma to watch over us and bless us with good health, success and happiness always.

Here is a short video taken on the occasion.  Hope and pray that this tradition lives on especially among the young ones.

Art Immersion and Appreciation - One of Life's Joy and Simple Pleasure

Passing through the Hongkong Central Library in Causeway Bay, I came upon an event - "The 3rd International Forum of Painting and Calligraphy Art Development" organized by the Literary and Art Exchange Association of Asia.

It was a wonderful experience and very satisfying afternoon for me - To be able to immerse myself in deep mental appreciation of one of the oldest artistic traditions in the world - Chinese painting and calligraphy.  I am so proud to see how this art form is still growing strong and practiced by many.

The unique aspect of Chinese painting and calligraphy is that it still uses the traditional materials of brush dipped on black or colored ink set against paper or silk.  The completed art works are then mounted in hanging scrolls or handscrolls. 

Let me share with you the joy and beauty of the various artworks on display in this slideshow:
