Origami Creations - Endangered Green Turtles

I have been on home leave since the end of July and enjoying my holidays.

Looking through my blog, I just remembered that I folded the green sea turtle of Jacky Chan, a famous origamist from HK, and tried a unique presentation.

This is the turtle crawling among Koko crunch chips ... my way of interpreting the baby sea turtles struggle for survival to reach the water from their nest.

My other interpretation is to add sweet (candy) colors as they leave their nest for the shore.  

It maybe a tough journey for all of us but surely a sweet one!

Origami Creations - Cool Box Pleating Designs

I was so enamored by a box pleating origami model by a master origamist in the name of Tomohiro Tachi.  Check out his flickr account here.

I don't usually fold using this technique which is normally applied to make complex human form designs, but this one is a great exception.

This model is from an uncut square sheet of paper and you may find the tutorial here by another origamist, Mr. Peter Stein.

Mr. Stein also made a variation called "Cheers" (red wine and wine glass) but this time from a rectangular paper.

Origami Creations - Folding Nemo the Clownfish (小丑魚)

Just re-watched "Finding Nemo" the other day which led me to dig out my origami box for the clown fishes which I have folded long before.

I am a big fan of origami models with color changes and one of this challenge can be encountered with the clown fish.

First catch is Roman Diaz's clownfish.

Lovely

Next catch is Katrin Shumakov's (Oriland) design.

I remember making one by a famous Korean origamist Seo Won Seon (redpaper) but couldn't find it now.  Guess that is the one that got away :-(.

Origami Design and Creations - My Muttley Dog Earrings

Due to insistent public (my daughters) demand, I was requested to make "Muttley dog" earrings.  This is actually the origami design I made and blogged here.  

I haven't made earrings before but seems quite an interesting challenge.

After a weeks of viewing "how-to" youtube tutorials, I set-off to buy me my tools and materials.

And here is my finished product ...

Cute, huh?

So very glad that the public liked it.  They said its fun, unique and adorable.

Well, they should like it as it is limited edition and made specially by their loving and cool Dad.

Origami Creations - Lovely and Amazing Little Bird

As I continue to clean my box of old folds I came upon a favorite one ... the little bird by the famous japanese origamist Satoshi Kamiya.  

This is an awesome model as it is designed with the bottom part closed. I remember to have been pausing a lot of times especially on the shaping.

Origami Creations - The Great Master Neil Elias

I have long wished to fold a Neal Elias origami design and was quite fortunate enough to get hold of one of  his famous work - the Boy on a Rocking Horse.

Super cool

This model is from an uncut square sheet of paper which was a little bit difficult to shape due to its thickness in some areas.  

Overall result is just pure beauty!

Origami Design/Creations - Cat on a Mouse

I love a challenge and decided to make me some cats.  Initially, I decided to make a "Cat on a Mouse" on one square sheet of paper.  

Here is the cool result:

I did find the model cute but only to my taste/liking.  So I decided to make a single subject fold instead and here it is.

Not really an outstanding model but exudes cuteness and quirkiness which I enjoy.  The cartoony face and unconventional form makes me happy!

Origami Creations - All about Dogs Part 1

I have been inspired to fold all the origami dog models that I can get hold of.  This started with the creation of my simple Muttley Dog (here).  Quite impressed with the many different species and the creative work by mostly famous origamist.

Here's the first batch...

Poodle and Doberman

Both cool models especially with the color change on the Doberman.  Quite not so impressed with my folds though as I was using small kami paper.  I plan to redo this again next time with bigger paper.

Origami Creations/Designs - Penguins in Mini Neo Magazine

Quite happy to see my own designs published in the Mini Neo magazine no. 20.  Another simple pleasure moment - :o).

Simple Pleasures - Blessed with Friends Magic Touch

Reminds me of the saying  "when it rains, it pours!".  Meaning after a time without rain and the crops are dying, rain does come and it will really be a big and continuous one.

I wrote about the joy of seeing my new found friends making my designs just last week here.  This week, I have been blessed with more lovely pieces.

This one is from a much loved and talented artist who could be one of the people that have kick started me in this journey.  Her name is Yara Yagi and you may find more of her lovely pieces here.  Her blog is a MUST see too!

Origami Creations - Simple yet Challenging Dragon Models

My first time to reverse engineer an interesting model in Flickr and quite happy with the result.  Even more happier when the original creator was delighted with my folding and photo.

These are the sleeping and baby dragon design by the unassuming origami artist David Donohue (A.K.A. David Wires).  You may check his other beautiful and interesting designs here.

Really quite tempting to use his bases to proceed and make a more detailed dragon.  Probably one of these days, I will surprise him.

Origami Creations - Siamese Fighting Fish (暹羅鬥魚)

I have always wanted to try and fold a Robert J. Lang origami model.  This famous master is an American physicist who is also one of the foremost origami artists and theorists in the world.

He has designed and folded so many models from the simple to mostly highly complex pieces so it is a bit of a challenge for me to decide which one to do.

Finally, I got to see his Siamese Fighting Fish design and decided to make one for me.

It's a real fighter!
 

I chose foil paper to fold this design which makes a bit shiny on the photos but the actual piece is really beautiful and can stand by itself.

Origami Creations - Maekawa Seahorse (海馬)

I chance upon another wonderful design by the famous japanese origamist Jun Maekawa.  It is his seahorse.

I am very impressed by this artist as his works are very fun and exciting to fold.  I have wrote about him before here.  It was with regards to his wonderful squid design.

Same with the squid, his seahorse design is simple yet surprisingly unique and beautiful.  

With awesome ear flaps.

Now with the real thing!

Origami Designs/Creations - Simple Dogs and Puppies

Finally, I was able to fulfill a friend request ... to make an easy origami dog.  

I am calling this one "Muttley Dog" from a favorite cartoon character of mine in the TV show "Dick Dastardly & Muttley".  He is undeniably a happy character with a great laugh.

To top it off, I gave them some cute puppies too!

Simple Pleasures - The Wonderful Friendships We Keep

I have been fortunate enough to be blessed with new talented friends who share the same passion and are very generous and kind hearted.

It is with great joy to design and create art but even greater joy when it is shared and appreciated.  In origami, the penultimate happiness is when you see people folding your own creations.  Quite humbling and overwhelming feeling!

My most favorite as it is being taught and shared by a wonderful origami teacher by the name of Hisako Tanji to kids.  The photo was for Children's Day.  A lovely and wonderful soul indeed!  She's a living angel to me!
