Origami Creations - Mary had a Little Lamb

A lovely sheep model by a Korean origamist - Jeong Ki-Dam caught my attention.  I encountered some difficulty making its feet but fortunate enough to recover and complete the model.

Such a joy to fold ... now to take the photo ... Mary came to mind so I went to dig out my daughters' collection of small toys.

Tada!

Mary had a CUTE lamb, right?

Hope I did justice to this sheep model ... I know Mary is just as cool!

Have a wonderful week!

Origami Creations - Anyone for Hello Kitty

Who doesn't love a "Hello Kitty" (Ribbon Cat)?

My daughter happens to see this cute model by Matsui Erika and prodded me to fold one for her. Quite a smart design and enjoyable fold.

Uber Cute!
What do you think of my photo?  Cool, huh?  For a smart design I thought of making sure to get a smart photo too.  Fortunately I have this origami kami paper in front of me and just saw the right effect.

Hope you liked my fold.  Have a great weekend!

Origami Creations - Have you heard of a Generuk?

Have you heard of a Generuk?

Frankly, I have only encountered this term when a vietnamese origamist friend (Pham Hoang Tuan aka Oritube Master) made a design for this animal.

Lovely

By wikipedia definition, it is a long-necked species of antelope found in Africa.  Oftentimes it is called giraffe-necked antelope.

This is my first time to fold an origami piece from a RECTANGLE as I seem to be so attached to the old origami rule - folding from a square.  With some challenge from my friend (the designer), I finally went to fold this cool piece.  You my find the diagram here.

Enjoy!

Origami Creation - Beautiful Ballerinas

Just got a new cool and generous japanese friend in FB who makes very interesting origami pieces and freely shares them with everyone.  His name is Shunichi Ashimura.  You may view his works here.

I love the simplicity of his creations and their unconventional folding sequence.  The first one I folded was his ostrich design with the photo diagram can be found here.

Cool, huh!

Then, he showed his ballerina design which is pretty awesome.

In dance and in a sitting pose.

Actually, the model is missing an arm (dancing) and a leg (sitting) but the beauty of the piece overshadows these deficiencies.  What do you think?

If you might be interested to try the dancing piece, here is the link.  The sitting ballerina was my re-engineering which you may easily get by looking at this photo.

Hope you enjoyed my folds and have a great week!

Origami Design/Creation - Mountain Folding in Madesimo Italy

I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a design competition for an awesome origami event to be held in Madesimo Italy.  It is called "Mountain Folding - Origami Creativity in the Alps".  You may find more details here.

Details of my entry is as follows:

Title:  Majestic Beauty and the Glorious Beast
Paper:  Uncut 21.5 cm square of dual color kami
Notes:  Finished 3D model measures 14.5 cm x 8 cm x 5 cm

Concept:

Immediate impulse was to create a mountain range for a panoramic effect and the unassuming cow that grazes on these grandiose mountains.  Both are unmistakably wonderful subjects worthy of recognition and extremely relevant to the coming mountain folding activity.  One will surely encounter these beautiful works of art in the lovely village of Madesimo.

Without further ado, I have designed and created below model.

The contest has been completed and winners announced.  Though I didn't make it, I am so proud and happy to see my creation along with the great artist who participated in this competition.

Hope you enjoyed my work.  Looking forward to the next challenge!

Origami Creations - Regal Roman Horse

I have been looking for some challenge these past few weeks and was fortunate enough to chance upon the folding competition for the Horse (Caballo) model of the famous origamist Roman Diaz.

Here is my interpretation of this wonderful art piece.

Reminds me of the Spirit Horse
Really an enjoyable fold but the most demanding part is the sculpting of the head (especially the mane) and the body.

I tried to experiment with another look for this model and was able to come up with a very admirable pose.

Hope you've enjoyed my art work.  Have a wonderful week!

Origami Creations - Endangered Rhinoceros (犀角)

I have long been attracted to fold a Rhinoceros but was not quite fortunate to find a good model ... until now.

The charging beast
This is designed by the famous japanese origamist named Noboru Miyajima.  Quite impressed by its structure and shaping and additional details for eyes and nostrils.

Here is another photo showing the bulk of the head and body structure.

Awesome facial details

It was a very satisfying fold and hope you like it.  Have a great week!

Origami Creations - Graceful, Powerful and Compassionate Dolphins

One of the Earth's most intelligent, sociable and adorable animal - the dolphin.

In the latest Tanteidan magazine no. 19, I was fortunate enough to fold a simple yet impressive design of a dolphin created by the japanese origamist Yamakita Katsuhiko.

Divine creature of the sea
Quite delighted by its unconventional base and folding sequence.  Its form and structure is undeniably spot on.

Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Origami Creations - All about Dogs Part 5

Just realized that I couldn't catch up writing about the dogs which I have folded the last few weeks.  So let me try to put more dogs on this post.

First one is from a diagram by Ko Chun Kin on his Yorkshire Terrier found here.  It was a bit difficult and confusing that it turned out to be a fat chihuahua.

My Fat Chihuahua

Next is the simple dog by my ori-pal and Ori-expert origamist Barth Dunkan.  Go check out his flickr account here and you'll be astounded by the wealth of his creations.

From an Ori-pal Barth Dunkan (Magic Fingaz)

Lovely bulldog by the famous origamist Quentin Trollip.  I enjoyed the model's body and facial shaping.  His flickr account is here.

Cool Bulldog

Another simple sitting dog by Ryo Aoki.

Simple Sitting Dog
A standing dog by Paul Frasco which I folded from the youtube video here.

Standing dog with my fave drink
My teacup chow-chow puppy by Yasuhiro Sano (never knew the creator till now as I folded this from an old japanese book a long while back).

Fitting in just right
Hope you've enjoyed this post.  More doggy folds coming soon ...

Origami Fold - Shuzo Fujimoto Diamond Escher Tessellation

It's been a long while since I've done some origami tessellation.  For more info on this technique, check out my previous blog here on the famous Hydrangea designed by Shuzo Fujimoto.

So, I finally decided to do another Fujimoto model.  This is the cool Escher piece - a series of overlapping diamonds.

Back View
At first, I was thinking of stopping here but when I saw Tess Master John Mckeever's level-up variation called the 4 Diamond-a-side Fujimoto Escher style step, I decided to move on.

John is so kind enough to share the CP (crease pattern) and some instructions here.

Cool Stuff, huh?
The collapsing of the model after making all the creases was tough.  Frankly, it took me a whole day with a lot of breaks in-between to complete the project.  Fortunately, the process was an interesting ride as I accidentally made beautiful slip ups' which yielded wonderful results.

4 sunken corner diamonds

Floral center piece
Really quite exhausting work but super well worth the effort!

Have a wonderful week!
