Origami Design - Christmas is the time for LOVE 3 in 1 Model

I joined the Mini-Reto Hearts origami challenge again and came up with a cool design.  It's a "3 models in 1" from one uncut square sheet of paper.

Here it is:

Front View - "Sumo"Santa Claus

A big bodied Papa Noel ... I likened to the sumo wrestlers of Japan but super cooler :-).

Back View - Christmas Tree
A cute mini christmas tree for the back side.

Inside - a Huge Heart
An enormous movable heart ... a big surprise!

Made a short video of this special model so you may be able to see the transformation clearer.

Enjoy and wish one and all a wonderful Christmas!

Origami Creations - Christmas Stars and Snowflakes

In the spirit of Christmas I looked around for a star and snowflake origami design to use as ornaments.  One design attracted my attention, the Fractal by the famous origamist Roman Diaz.  Do check his creations from his flickr account here.

Awesome repetitive folding
It is not that difficult but you need a large and strong paper to be able to make a nice result.  Luckily, there is a tutorial video in the web which I can share with you.

Good luck and hope you enjoy making this awesome piece.

Origami Creations - Father Christmas

Among the Santa Claus models which I have folded, my most favorite is the Father Christmas by Steve and Megumi Biddle which you can find in his book "Essential Origami".

So adorable
Cool huh?

I made a small variation with Santa's shoes here ... to make its color match his gloves and cap.

Enjoy your holidays!

Origami Creations - Easy Modular Christmas Tree

I am quite impressed with the multitudes of origami Christmas Trees designed this year so I thought of trying my luck with creating one.

After much folding and creasing ... I end up with re-using a Traditional fold - the Iris flower.  You can find the diagram here.

Lovely Irises

Introducing the Bottom's Up Iris flower Christmas Tree ...

Adorable <3

Here is the short "the making" video.  Enjoy!

Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to one and all!

Origami Creations - How about Monkeys?

Brrrr ... really cold in Hong Kong these days!

I chance upon a cool model by the japanese master Hideo Komatsu - Japanese Macaque.  This is a great opportunity to fold a monkey as I haven't tried making one.

Cool shaping
The proportions is impressive but I really struggled with the shaping.  The end result though is quite satisfying.

What do you think?

Enjoy the Christmas week!

Origami Design - My Simple Sheep for CNY 2015

Finally, I got my own sheep design and submitted to the Japan Origami Academy Society (JOAS) celebration for World Origami Days (WOD).  Also, I used it for the International Origami Internet Olympiad competition  as my design task.

It will be the Chinese New Year of the Goat/Sheep next year so it is my fitting tribute to the best holiday of the year in Asia!

Simple and Sleek

Black is beautiful too!
I have prepared the diagrams for this piece and have asked some good pro ori-friends to test fold and provide feedback.

Below are their awesome interpretation of my design.

My fave electric blue sheep
Check out Patricia's folds in her flickr account here.

Origami Creations - Another Simple Sheep

In my search for another sheep model, I came upon this awesome model but with no information of who the creator is.  Surely it's another cool japanese origamist or plainly a traditional design.

Impressive color change and shaping
Though the feet might come out to be a little too small, the head appearance is too impressive to behold.

Below is the video tutorial for this model.

Enjoy!

Origami Creations - Starstruck

Christmas is fast approaching and I have been starstruck for two (2) months now.  Yep, I have been secretly folding stars to use as ornaments for our christmas tree.

Here are some of the standouts.

Cool Six pointed stars
A favourite fold designed by the japanese origamist Jun Maekawa.  Encountered a slight difficulty but the result is outstandingly beautiful.

Lovely symmetry

Next one is from the lovable japanese origamist Tomoko Fuse.  The fold sequence is repetitive but quite smooth and enchanting.  This model looks impressive with back lighting.

Cool color change effect
This last model is by the famous modular origamist Carmen Sprung.  It uses six (6) square sheets of paper and be prepared for the challenge to insert the last unit to complete this cool star.

Here is the origami diagram and you may find the tutorial below:

Happy Holidays!

Origami Creations - Jolly Hippopotamus

While doing the stripes challenge in the last posting, I also came upon the hippo model by origami master John Montroll.  I immediately fell in love with it.

You may find this model in this book here.

Cool shaping
I admired the shaping of the whole model but would have been more impressed if it has some color changing for the eyes.  Nonetheless, I loved it to bits!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Origami Creations - Stripes

Time for a cool folding challenge ... that of folding animals with stripes.

I have chosen the Zebra by origami Master John Montroll from his book African Animals in Origami.  More details here.

Cool and exciting
It has a lovely fold sequence and the outcome is impressive.  One thing to observed during the fold is to carefully make the color change stripes wide enough to be clearly seen.

Hope you liked it!

Origami Creations - Rectangulum Modular

I haven't done any geometric modulars for a long while now so when I happen to see the amazing Rectangulum (magic rings) model by Thoki Yenn, I have decided that this should be my next project.

Cool symmetry and perfect locking
It is actually an easy modular using six (6) units only.  Close attention to the pre-creasing is important to ensure that all the parts will fit perfectly.

You may find more details here.  Below is also a video tutorial for your convenience.

Enjoy!

Origami Creations - Beautiful Ryukin Goldfish

One of my favorite asian origami designer is Master Ronald Koh.  He has created a lot of famous designs but what impressed me most are his goldfish models.

To learn more about Mr. Koh as well as his creations, click here.

Below is his Ryukin Goldfish that I have folded recently.

Perfectly shaped
I encountered some difficulty during the folding as the model paid a lot of attention to details on the shaping (from its eyes to the tail fins) to mimic the real thing.  Nevertheless, the resulting piece is a great joy to behold!

Hope you liked it too and have a great week ahead!

Origami Creations - Andreas Rose Tessellation

I find immense beauty in symmetry ... this is why I love JC Nolan's Andreas Rose.

It is a little bit tricky to fold but when you get the hang of it, all would be smooth sailing.  Best of all, it makes an impressive gift!

Lovely Rose

Diagrams are available here and I have posted the video tutorial below:

Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Origami Creations - Silence of the Lambs

Next year will be the Chinese New Year of the goat/sheep (羊年) and it reminds me of my favourite movie - silence of the lamb - a really awesome scary thriller of a movie.

Thinking about it, I was inspired to search for origami sheeps to fold and stumbled upon this model by Atsunori Muraki.

Cute and cool shaping

Aside from its lovely appearance, I enjoyed its unique proportions too.  It got me also excited to make my own origami sheep.

Hmmm ... that will be a cool challenge to welcome  the coming chinese new year!

Have a nice day!

Origami Creations - World Origami Days 2014

I have supported the World Origami Days (WOD) celebration for 2014.  This is the time of year from October 24 to November 11 that we get to have the chance to spread the joy of paperfolding worldwide.

For a brief of history ... October 24 is actually the birthday of Lillian Oppenheimer (1898-1192), founder of the first origami group in America.  She was also one of the founders of the British Origami Society and Origami USA.  While November 11 is Origami Day in Japan where the paper crane has become a symbol of peace.  Thus, it has been agreed to have the 2 1/2 weeks of celebration.

For this year, I have folded and posted the following in the WOD FB page of the Japan Origami Academic Society (JOAS).  A fun way to promote my origamist friends as well as my favorite origami models.

Enjoy!

Following two (2) folds I have prepared but missed to post before the deadline.  I loved them too so I am posting it here.

Have a nice day!

Origami Creations - Lovely Symmetrical Flowers

I just found a cool origami flower through one of my instagram (IG) friends.  This is called Fiore II designed by Riccardo Colletto.

Its shaping is unique while its symmetry is impressive.  I just have to fold one for my collection.

Here it is:

Origami Creations - Dog Delights

I saw this cute doggie origami by Fuchimoto Muneji.  Again, I couldn't resist to look for its diagram and fold it to add to my doggie fold collection.

The model can be found in his book Origami Pet Park.  Here is his Dachsund piece.

Cute Dachsund
It is a wonderful fold and quite a whimsical piece too.  Surprise to find a tutorial in youtube and I am posting it below for your enjoyment.

Enjoy!

Origami Design Publication in AEP Convention Book 2014

Got an early christmas present today ... received wonderful news of having one of my designs published in the AEP Convention book 2014 - XVII Convención Internacional de Papiroflexia de la AEP (Sevilla, 2014).

The model was one of my favorite - 3D Simple Horse Head which I have blogged here.

Here below is the book.

What a great feeling!  Do try to fold this enjoyable simple piece too!

Origami Creations: Something with Horns

As the chinese new year of the goat is coming soon, I have been searching for some inspiration to design one.  Fortunately, I was able to encounter Shunichi Ashimura's goat design.

Look at this impressive model.

Lovely proportions and color change

I enjoyed the body shaping and more importantly to have both horns and ears on its head.  This will be a great challenge for me but quite a helpful learning experience to be able to fold this model.

Hope to be able to design one before the big CNY!

Origami Creations - Simple Ant

I have long been postponing to fold lovely origami models from a rectangular paper.  The reason is because I am so attached to the old rule in origami of using a square sheet of paper, no cuts and no gluing.  I am also quite lazy to pick up some scissors and do extra measurements.

Well, lo and behold, I finally succumbed to Rui Roda's simple ant model.

Cute and Adorable
Aside from its cuteness, the delightful and clear diagrams made me decide to make it.  He has freely shared them and is available here.  You may also try to check out Rui's flickr account and be inspired by his skill and talent.

Have a great week!

Origami Creations - Simple Anime Character

So fortunate to have received a diagram for this cool model by Hans Romano called the Chibi Anime Girl.

Uber Cool
Quite an imposing figure.  It uses the box pleating technique and easy to follow folding sequence to arrive at this amazing model.

I highly recommend for you to follow this guy at his FB account here.

Hope you like this!

Origami Design - Halloween Bat Comeback

I have seen a lot of activity for Halloween and decided to relive my old bat origami design ...  just like the zombies rising from the dead.

Long Eared Bat & Annabelle
Tada ... with no less than Annabelle the doll to give scary support.  Well, I think it toned the horror part a bit though.

For anyone interested to fold my bat design, diagrams and tutorials can be found here.

Origami Creations - Halloween Special Gaikotsu

For the Halloween 2014, I decided to fold a skeleton complete with the skull and the whole body.  I have chosen to do the Gaikotsu model of japanese origamist Hojyo Takashi.  (Gaikotsu is the japanese word to mean skeleton in engish).

Look ...

Booooooooo
Yes, it is not the scary one but the cute and funny one.  It's actually a three (3) piece unit - head, top and lower body parts.

Enjoyed every bit of the folding ... I hope you liked the finished piece to!

Origami Creations: Checkered Cube

Another multi-color cube model is the Check (Checkered) by the japanese origamist Fumiaki Shingu.

Cool colorful model

Quite attracted to this model too but would prefer to glue the free flaps to the paper so that the checkered shape can be clearly seen.

You may find the diagram for this model here.

I've also done the 3 unit piece for this to make a Checkered Dipyramid as shown below:

Awesome for a 3 Unit model
Cool huh!  Diagram for this can be found here.

Have a nice day!

Origami Creatioins - Cube Octahedron

Another interesting geometrical shape called the Octahedron by the famous japanese origamist Toshikazu Kawasaki (the same person who designed the Kawasaki rose) will be the next model that I decided to fold.

It also uses 6 units and is practically a cube with the corners cut off.  Thus resulting to a total of 8 triangular plane face emerging from this geometric figure.

Cool and sturdy model
Quite impressed by its shaping but beware of the challenge in assembling the model with its last piece.  Try and be amazed :-).

Here is the video tutorial for this model.

Enjoy!

Origami Creations - Multi-color Stripe Cubes

Another awesome cube I found in the web is the Multi-color cube (Cubo Multi-cor) by Rita Foelker and the Line Cube by Fumiaki Shingu.

Again, its a model which I cannot be bored looking at especially when you used 6 different colored square kami to make it.  As usual, this model does not require cutting or gluing.

A gem of a beauty
What do you think?

I believe you are getting excited to make this too so I am enclosing the link of the diagram here.  For Mr. Shingu's model, the diagram is here.

Enjoy!

Origami Creations - Basic Sonobe Cube

In the origami world of modulars, one can not avoid to encounter the so called "Sonobe unit" which is used to make other geometrical shapes and forms.  the unit was designed by Mr. Sonobe Mitsunobu.

Here is my sonobe cube using 6 units, not cuts and no gluing.

Simple and Sturdy Cube

It's a very simple yet beautiful piece and you can experiment with colors for a livelier look.

Details of the diagram is found here.  And I am posting it below for everyone's convenience.
