Origami Designs - Origami Publication with the British Origami Society

A glorious end for the year 2015, I successfully got a design published with the British Origami Society Magazine.  Woohoo!

This is issue no. 295 for December 2015 where you can find the ori-diagram for my "Baby Chibi Rabbits in motion".  More details on my model was blogged here.  I have learnt that this issue was the second largest of all time (the first one was issue no. 100).

I was also able to receive a disc on my participation for the BOS Spring Convention last March 2015.  My baby mammoth and 3D Horse Head design was fortunately included on the convention book.

These will be fond mementos for a great creative year!  You may learn more about the British Origami Society by checking this link.

Thank you BOS and I wish you more success and power in the year 2016!

Origami Creations - Simple Santa and Christmas Tree

The spirit of Christmas is still with me and the family so I have done a lot of Santa folds aside from my own creations.

Here is one of my favourite Santa designed by the famous japanese  origamist/master Kunihiko Kasahara.

Pure origami cuteness
And not to be outdone, I have paired it with my simple christmas tree from my "Christmas is a time for love - 3 in 1 model" design which I have blogged here.

Using special kami paper for tree decors :-)
I am very proud of this unique design as it is one of a kind - to have 3 different objects for one uncut sheet of paper.  The diagram is now available in my newly opened Etsy shop.

Below is a sneak preview of the model:

Have a wonderful Christmas and run-up to the New Year!

Origami Creations - Merry Christmas Santa Crane!

Ho, ho, ho ... I have an awesome fold to share with you this time!

Yes, its a santa crane designed by the japanese origamist Arisawa Yuga.

Amazing color change
Quite an intriguing creation, that of combining Christmas with the origami crane - a veritable symbol of origami.  This just goes to prove that nothing is impossible in paper folding.

May I greet one and all a blessed Merry Christmas and a glorious New Year!

Origami Creations - Cool 3D Chick

I was quite attracted by the chick model designed by the japanese origamist Akihiro Kosuge.  Check this out:

Head to toe - Awesome
The detailing of the head and the feet is intensely beautiful.  Quite impressed!

You may check out his flickr account here.  He has also shared a lot of CP designs freely in his site.

Hope all of you are getting ready for Christmas!

Origami Creations - The Best Ori-Rabbit Design

Undoubtedly the best origami rabbit is designed by the famous master origamist Ronald Koh.  His model was exhibited in the "Surface to Structure:  Folded Forms" show in New York.  Details here.

The best with the second best :-)
I am very fortunate to be able to fold Mr. Koh's design which is quite detailed and impressive.   Thus also gave me an opportunity to pair it with the second best rabbit design (made by me :-D).  Looks nearly the same, huh?

Wishing everyone a great Christmas week ahead!

Origami Creations - The Prince and the Rhino

It's in the news again ... Rhino killings are back with Prince Harry giving his support for its conservation.  Sad news indeed, check out below:

One of my beloved animals to fold ... here is the design by the famous japanese origamist Kunihiko Kasahara.

Simple and Bold lines
It's an impressive animal and hopefully we can win the fight against the poachers.

Have a great weekend!

Origami Creation - Remembering Babe the Pig

Babe was such a wonderful movie ... pigs could really be sweet, cute and cuddly.  They are so adorable.

Being so inspired with Babe, I searched for a pig piece to fold.  Here is Fuchimoto Muneji's masterpiece.

Likes his nuts :-)
I love the simple lines and geometric shaping for this design - from the snout, ears, back legs and tail!  It is undoubtedly a perfect pig!

Hope the week is a kind one for all!

Origami Creations - The Smart Puffer/Balloon Fish

I just saw an interesting national geographic video of a puffer/balloon fish and how it evades a predator.  Check out the video below:

Such an amazing and cool animal.

Here below is my origami fold rendition designed by Fuchimoto Muneji.

Puffer Fish in its environment

Quite an intriguing subject ... will try my hand on designing one for my collection.

Hopefully I get to make one soon!

Origami Creations - Slow moving and Carefree animal

The Panda bear is a slow moving and carefree animal whose primary focus is to find and eat bamboo all day long.  It's cute and cuddly and easily be the most loved and adored animal in the world.

I have a soft heart for this animal too and enjoy folding the impressive color change effect to make one.

Lazy Bear

This stress free looking panda model is designed by the famous Noboru Miyajima.  As they say, the panda is a powerful spirit animal inspiring tranquil strength and determination.  Hope I can get some of its traits to be able to stay continually strong with a happy-go-lucky attitude :-).

Have a great weekend guys!

Origami Creations - Lovable dog series continued

To continue my love for doggy folds ... I present here a miniature schnauzer dog designed by one of my favorite japanese origamist Fuchimoto Muneji.

Uber Cute - he adores apples :-)

His designs are quite cute yet could be tricky to fold for the first time.  Once you get to understand his base fold, it will then be easy to make them.

Hope you like this one!

Origami Creations - Funny and Silly Racoons

Got a spark of interest folding raccoons from a funny video I saw of this cute and silly critters.

I found and folded this cool piece by the japanese origamist Noboru Miyajima.  It's a more simpler one as I would want to try something with the distinctive tail stripes.

Have a wonderful week!

Origami Creations - Modular Flowers for Kinder School

I had a special request from the boss.  She is my lovely teacher-wife who needs to have paper blooms in their classroom.

I started to make a difficult 5-piece flower unit and got bored.  So I decided to search for a more simple modular flower in youtube and was lucky to find one and added my own twist:  1.  Instead of 5 units, I reduced it to 3;  2.  Added twirls/curls.;  3. Use staples rather than glue to connect them :-).

Adorable blooms with curls

Lovely pointy center petals

Here is the video link for your reference.

Here are all the flowers I made for my wife and so delighted that she and her students like them!

Beautiful decorative flowers
Hope you like these simple flowers too!

Origami Creations - My First Cool Camel Fold

I have been searching for a nice origami camel design for a long time now but was quite unsuccessful as most of them were using rectangular bases.

Finally, I get to see and fold Noboru Miyajima's camel below.

Impressive look and proportions
I am quite attracted to simple origami folds and appearance and this model fits perfectly to my taste.  It retains its raw paper form of the animal - this is genuine origami to me.

Hope you like this fold too!

Origami Creations - Rainer Bergs' Small Piggy

I had another great opportunity to fold and draw an origami diagram for an ori-friend.  His name is Rainer Berg.

Check out his flickr account here.

This is his cute Small Pig design.

Uber cute and shapely :-)
I do not have any experience in wet-folding for shaping my origami models.  This specific design works really well with wet-folding to perfectly form the pig.  Hopefully in the future, I can master this form of technique and enhance my folding skills.

Have a wonderful December guys!

Origami Creations - Re engineered Panda Bookmark

I was in search of an origami model to fold as a gift for a former high school classmates' daughter visiting HK.

As I was checking the web, I came upon Trollip's Panda bookmark and decided to re-create it.

A cute Red Panda

It's quite a simple model but with an interesting color change fold.

More importantly, it gave a lot of happiness for a little girl who just came from Ocean Park and was able to have her own Red Panda Bear.

Have a great weekend!

Origami Creations - Paul Rawling's Big Eyed Birdie

I had a great opportunity to draw the diagram and fold this original origami design of Mr. Paul Rawling aka "PaperPaul".  Check out his flickr account here.

His simple style and technique reflects my own so it was a wonderful pleasure making it.

Uber cute
It's a "feel good" model for me as I really enjoyed the shaping and smart facial color change.  Hope he likes my rendition of his genuine creation.

Have a nice day!

Origami Creations - The Wicked Witch ... A Mask Reprise

I enjoyed making the masks design by the famous Japanese origamist Hideo Komatsu which I have previously blogged here.

I just could not resist to make his latest one.

Amazing spiky nose
The witch mask is quite a cerebral creation.  From the proportions of its facial features, impressive color change and inclusion of a spiky nose, you can very well tell that it is a masterpiece!

The diagram is available in the JOAS magazine #148 here.

Have a great weekend!

Origami Creations - The Cutest Pony You've Ever Seen

I found a cool Japanese origami website by Usuda Takayuki with a lot of free diagrams to try out.  Here is the site - click here.

Super cute with color change
His pony design requires 60 steps and shaping the model is a must.   You can find the steps for this model here.

It's quite an interesting piece and I suggest you should give it a try.

Enjoy!

Origami Creations - Christ the King

I rummage through my papers and found an old origami diagram of Jesus Christ - the King of the Jews.  This was from an old book I found in the HK Central Library and was quite impressed with the simplicity of the model.

I remember not having any humans in my folds.  This would be a great opportunity to make one.

Christ on an invisible Cross
The proportion is not perfect but the resemblance is stunningly beautiful.  I took it a step further by embedding the model on a cloth to represent the "shroud" covering His lifeless body.

I was born a Catholic, raised a Catholic and continually seeks strength, wisdom and blessings from my Saviour.

Today is a special day!  It's my birthday and I am so thankful to Him!

Origami Creations - The Smart German Shepherd Dog

I am back to adding folds to my origami doggy collection.  Here is the German Shepherd dog by the famous origami master Roman Diaz.

Color change perfection
It's structure, proportions and stance is adorable.  It would have been great to make it with a dual color paper in black and brown ...  something I can add to my "redo" list.

You may find the diagram in his latest book here.

Have a great week!

Origami Creations - Who loves Tuna?

In spite of not having any color change technique, I was so impressed with this Tuna fish model by the Japanese origamist Fuchimoto Muneji.

Perfect proportions
Reminds me of the Tuna Tornado video I saw months ago ...

An amazing video for a wonderful week!

Origami Creations - Simple Giraffe for Tiergarten Schonbrunn Zoo

In support of the world record attempt by the Tiergarten Schonbrunn Zoo in Vienna, I have folded this simple origami giraffe.

Baby Giraffe with parents :-)
Their goal is to be able to receive 1,828 or more folded pieces.  Why 1.828?  This was the year when they had their first giraffe in the zoo.  For more details and a simple origami diagram, check this link.

Origami Creations - 2 Intersecting Pentagonal Dodecahedron

I have been trying to make the 4 intersecting pentagonal dodecahedron by Dirk Eisner but it seems such a gargantuan task.  For a visual idea of what I am planning to do, check this link.

As mentioned here , it is my goal to be able to achieve this feat.  But, I decided to take baby steps instead.  So here is my 2 intersecting pentagonal dodecahedron :-).

Awesome, right?

Looks good as it is :-)
Next goal ... the 3 pentagonal dodecahedron.  Hope I can keep my spirit and interest high so I wouldn't give up on my goal!

Have a lovely weekend!

Origami Designs - Cute Baby Chibi Penguins

I saw an invitation to submit an origami diagram to the "La Revista Latinoamericana de Origami - 4 Esquinas" group for their upcoming book compilation titled "Plegar el Mundo" (Fold the World).

This could be another fun opportunity so I decided to revisit an old design of mine and see if I can improve it.  This was my neo penguin which I have blogged here.

... and now giving birth to my baby chibi version :-)

Facial features and shaping updated

Looking cool among their chibi peers

So adorable <3
I haven't heard from them yet but I am hoping that my submission made it to the book.

Have a nice day!

Two of the best origami clown mask was designed by the famous japanese origamist Hideo Komatsu.  Aside from its awesome color change, the facial proportions and shaping is just outstanding.

Check them out ...

The first design

Updated design
Both designs are cool but if I have to choose one, I prefer the latest one as it has a 3D nose and color change lips.

What do you think?

Wishing you all a great week ahead!

I had a wonderful surprise today.  I was trying to search for some origami models and so glad to see my works listed in "Gilad's Origami Page - Everything Origami at your Fingertips".  The link is here.

Cool, huh?
This website has been my "Go to Page" when searching for a good model to fold.  His database is very rich with information and I especially enjoy his book reviews.

This model is designed by the Japanese origamist Katsuhisa Yamada.  He has published many origami books and has created a lot of adorable models.  Check his website here.

Save the "Turtlets"
What do you think?

Origami Creations - Who wants a drink?

I found this lovable model on a chinese website which is so adorable.  It's this disposable tetra-pack milk drink by Jhon Doe.  He has a flickr account with a lot of surprisingly interesting models - check it here.

Anybody hungry? thirsty?
The look is so accurately beautiful.  If you may want to try, a crease pattern can be downloaded here.

Milky drink - yum yummy
Wishing one and all a great week!

Origami Designs - Baby Chibi Chameleon

Here is my seventh of the baby chibi design series ... a baby chameleon.

Lovely
This design just felt so good as it was something unexpected coming from the origami base that I was working with.  I felt the same way with the fox cubs for this model.

Hope you are enjoying this too!  Wishing everyone a great weekend!

Origami Creations - Pentagonal Dodecahedron

As I was checking my own flickr account, I was able to scan through a modular origami expert from Germany by the name of Dirk Eisner.  He makes a lot of cool geometric modular shapes.  Look at his account here and be mesmerized.

I sent him a message and he was kind enough to respond and give me his diagram to make the Pentagonal Dodecahedron.

Great shaping and symmetry
I thoroughly enjoyed making this piece.  But the bigger challenge is yet to come ... to make the four (4) interlocking dodecahedron.  Yes, four (4) of these and interconnected.

Hope I am able to succeed in my challenge ... till the next blog ...

Origami Creations - Basic Flagstone Tessellation

Finally, I am proud to be able to fold  a "flagstone" tessellation.  The look is likened to a flat stone design on a flooring of different geometric shapes.

Here is my fold:

Cool shapes
This is called a "basic flagstone molecule" and created by the famous American origamist Joel Cooper.  A tutorial is provided by Robin Scholz here.

I made my fold on a 16 x 16 grid only ... I plan to get me good paper and make the 32 x 32 grid soon.

A great week to all!

Origami Designs - Baby Chibi Mouse

Now for the sixth of the baby chibi series, I present my simple cartoony mouse.

Simple yet the proudest!

Fortunately this design just felt so perfect ... the ears, the face, the tail and their posture.  Though they look a bit arrogant, they are indeed the best of friends!

Have a wonderful weekend!  Till the next baby chibi design ...

Origami Creations - Cool Sea Bream Fish

In spite missing the color change effect on the fish model by Kaede Nakamura, it's detailing was impressive enough to convince me to try and make it.

Perfect for BBQ :-)
This is my first try and will surely make a bigger one with better paper soon.

If you want to try this, you can check out the photo diagram here.  It is a chinese website but I believe you can easily follow the instructions.

A great week to all!
